KDHS AGM & LECTURE: THE FISHERFOLK OF KILRUSH BY CAROLINE WILSON

KDHS AGM & LECTURE: THE FISHERFOLK OF KILRUSH BY CAROLINE WILSON

Image may contain: one or more people and outdoor
The Annual General Meeting of Kilrush & District Historical Society will be held in the Teach Ceoil, Grace Street, Kilrush, on Tuesday 27 June at 7:30pm. It will be followed at 8pm by Caroline Wilson's lecture on "The Fisherfolk of Kilrush: A Study of Traditional Fishing Methods in Kilrush", based on her 2016 thesis for the MA in Local History at the University of Limerick.

The fisherfolk of Kilrush were an almost separate community within the town of Kilrush. The study examines their economic and social background and everyday lives as told through the living memories of various contributors. These memories date back to the early 1920s and are representative of a variety of members from the fishing community including several generations of fishermen, fish buyers and some of the children and grandchildren of the fisherfolk of Kilrush. Caroline's thesis examined the profile of the fisherman and his family, and the various gender roles associated with salmon fishing. The lecture will describe in detail the methods and skills required for fishing on this part of the river Shannon, until the ultimate demise of traditional fishing in 2007.

Caroline is the daughter and granddaughter of Kelly fishermen from Kilrush. The Kelly family fished drift and draft net licences for many generations. Growing up as a member of this fishing community, Caroline's childhood involved fishing processes such as repairing nets and preparation and sale of salmon.

KDHS lectures are free to members, EUR5 for non-members. New members are welcome. The annual membership fee (July-June) is EUR20 and renewals are due at the AGM.
